Evaluating use of immune therapy in equine allergic reactions

Study overview

The study aims to assess effective of use of immune therapy in equine allergies compared to other therapies on the market. Collaborating veterinary practices will be requested to refer suitable participants, following discussion with horse's owner. Initial administration will be supervised by ESG staff, and collaborating veterinary practice staff will be trained in all study related procedure to deliver subsequent visits and collect required data.

Lay summary

Horses suffer from a wide range of allergies, which can impact their quality of life and limit their working ability. In recent years various treatments have been provided to reduce allergic reactions in horses. Once a blood based allergy test is conducted, selection of allergens is identified and immune therapy targeting these allergens can be developed and administered over period of weeks. We aim to assess if such therapy is better than other therapies on the market and it's cost effectiveness. Horses will be enrolled with owner permission and receive immune therapy over 12 weeks, followed up again at 4 months, 6 months, 8 months and 12 months.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Horses who display allergic reactions (skin, airway etc.) aged 1 to 25

Exclusion

pregnant mares, lactating mares, horse under 1 year, horse over 25, horses who shown previous negative reaction to immune therapy
